Our Story
Bone Health Initiative (BHI for short) provides education, resources, and tools to help students and the local communities understand bone disease and bone health. This includes but is not limited to osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, fibrous dysplasia, and arthritis.
As the only student-run organization on the UC Berkeley campus that works on issues regarding bone health, Bone Health Initiative works in conjunction with multiple non-profit organizations and foundations to further support its mission and causes. Its mission is to spread timely bone health information that supports the development and maintenance of strong and healthy bones as well as the prevention, detection and treatment of bone diseases.
Bone Health Initiative builds capacity for local community outreach by giving talks and providing FORE fracture risk assessments in senior homes, elementary schools, hospitals, health fairs, convalescent homes, etc. It also seeks to develop educational materials and conduct outreach in creative and engaging ways.
Previously known as American Bone Health at Berkeley (or ABH@Berkeley), the club’s mission was to educate the local community about osteoporosis and how to maintain bone health. It worked mainly in partnership with American Bone Health, a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 with the focus on spreading community awareness of osteoporosis. Now, as BHI, its goals are to expand on its focus to not just educate the community about osteoporosis, but also about bone health and pertaining diseases in general.
