Medications Can Hurt Your Bones!
Many medications have side effects or other components that lead to bone loss, or increase the chance of breaking a bone. Those with diseases that have no other choice but to take medicine that may have harmful side effects should take extra precautions to protect and strengthen their bones.
Common medicines include diabetes medication, antidepressants, blood thinners, and high doses of cortisone-like pills.
If you are taking these types of medication, you can take steps to be proactive and make bone health a priority. Know your bone density to monitor bone loss, take the lowest doses possible, get enough servings of calcium-rich food, practice good posture and strengthen your legs and do balance exercises to prevent falls and fractures.
As always, you should consult your health care provider before making any changes related to medicine intake and other major lifestyle changes.
