Bone Basics Speaker: Dr. Keaveny
The Bone Sense Decal, headed by BHI’s decal facilitator’s, Xammy Nguyenla, Chigozie Maduchukwu, and Emily Chen, typically lead this course. They also reach out to the bone community for experts who are willing to speak to the students and inform them about their own research. In the past there have been a variety of individuals, from multiple perspectives of bone health. This semester, we were honored to have Dr.
Dr. Keaveny is a Professor in the Departments of Bioengineering and Mechanical Engineering here at Cal. Keaveny also currently serves as the director of the Berkeley Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory, where research on human bones is done. Dr. Keaveny also served as the Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. So his knowledge on orthopedics, and overall bone health, is well versed. During the decal, Keaveny brought up the concept of osteocyte’s and structural redundancy, current research regarding stroke rates, and the importance and differences on trabecular bone and cortical bone. Dr. Keaveny also reinforced information that the students already learned, such as the importance of strengthening your bones at a young age in order to have stronger bones later. The relationship to this preventative mindset, and the drug treatment efficiency, was another point of interest both economically and physiologically.
A big “thank you!” to Dr. Keaveny!
